One of a series of site-specific Splash pieces Serra began in the late 1960s, Serra re-executed an earlier work in the SFMOMA in 1995 by hurdling ladleful after ladleful of molten lead into a corner of the gallery at the juncture where the wall meets the floor, a point he termed the "gutter." Repeatedly, jagged forms were pried from the corner and pulled toward the center of the room. This one was called Night Shift because it was created over three consecutive nights while the museum was closed.
