Frozen yogurt is often regarded as the healthier cousin to ice cream, thanks to its lower fat and calorie content, but Fraiche (1910 Fillmore St., 415-674-6876; 644 Emerson St., Palo Alto, 650-566-0055) is aiming to take frozen yogurt to new and healthier heights with its classic European recipes.

For starters, the shop crafts its own fresh (that is, nonfrozen) yogurt with local organic milks and without sugar and preservatives; you can buy it at the counter if you’re in the market for the genuine article. The fro-yo is made from the same probiotic-packed base, and Fraiche entices your taste buds with specially chosen mix-in selections: fresh organic fruit, chocolate shavings, toasted walnuts, coconut, and an olallieberry puree that is simply to die for. If a tangy chilled treat isn't enough to make your mouth water, Fraiche also offers an array of handmade baked goods, Blue Bottle Coffee, and slow-cooked oatmeal to start your day off right.
