The San Francisco Art Institute (800 Chestnut St., 415-771-7020), which was built on the site of a cemetery after the 1906 earthquake, is said to be haunted by several restless spirits who have found a home in the monastic tower of the building. It's been said that past students and staff members have heard footsteps ascending the stairs of the tower, watched doors open and close on their own, heard crashing sounds, and encountered other apparitions.
