I've always been curious about juice-based cleanses, like the insanely popular BluePrint Cleanse, but I don't know if I could make it past the third hour, much less the third day. Plus, if I'm depriving myself of solid food in the name of detox, I'd rather not pay Gary Danko-level prices — which is why I'm intrigued by the remarkably affordable detox programs at Frapez Smoothie Spa (4092 18th St., 415-503-1323).

This Castro juice bar offers two detox programs, both of which substitute regular meals with juices and smoothies under the advice of an in-house nutritionist. Though the Frapez Detox Program — in three-, five-, and seven-day regimens — sounds too restrictive for me, the three-day Fruit Fast costs just $115 and seems ideal for detox newbies.

After a consultation with the Frapez nutritionist, you get three days' worth of daily drinks, with different flavors every day: a 20-ounce fruit-only smoothie for breakfast, a 20-ounce fresh fruit juice, a 20-ounce fruit, nut, and herb smoothie for late lunch, plus daily herbal tea and fresh fruit snacks. I know it doesn't sound like much, but it's more sustenance than you get on the Frapez Detox Program, and at that price, you won't feel too guilty if you give up halfway through.
